Private lessons

In private lessons, a student receives personalized, one-on-one instruction from the coach. This is where problems in technique can be identified and corrected.

Private lessons are good for rapidly teaching new fencers the basics, without the distractions and slower pace of classes. Bad habits are not formed, because errors are corrected immediately, before they become habit.

Experienced fencers also benefit from private lessons, as nuances of good fencing form and strategy can be addressed and developed in greater detail than can be covered in classes. This is where a fencer’s strengths can be enhanced, weaknesses can be mitigated, and individual style can be optimized.

Private lessons are nominally 25 minutes long. Advanced fencers, who may find a 25 minute lesson too short, may opt for a 45 minute lesson. 45 minute lessons are not recommended for new and intermediate fencers, of fencers under 14 years of age.

Group classes

In group classes, students participate as a group and practice skill-building exercises together. The group is supervised, but the level of scrutiny each fencer receives is not as intense as in a private lesson. Skills are demonstrated and taught, but practiced with the other members of the group. Group classes are generally an hour to one-and-a-half hours long, depending on the skill level and subject matter.

Open fencing

During open fencing sessions, the floor is devoted to bouting for any participants present. We have five full-length, grounded strips with state-of-the-art scoring apparatus for ten fencers to use simultaneously. Open fencing is a time to practice skills learned in group classes or private lessons, try new strategies, or simply to have fun fencing and let off some steam. Open fencing is available to club members and non-members alike. It is included with all membership levels. Non-members pay a floor fee.
